What to wear for an outdoor fall family photo shoot?

One question that people often ask me is... how can we be well prepared for a photo shoot? What should I wear? If it’s a family photo shoot, they often ask, we should match our clothes, we should use the same outfit style?

I know… It can be overwhelming for my clients to figure out what to wear for their family photo shoot. This article, that is a small set of general advice, strives to be a helpful tool to make you easier how to pick out the perfect wardrobe for an outdoor fall photo shoot.

Look for coordinating colors but not outfits

Those days when everyone in the family wore the same white t-shirt and blue jeans have gone. Now the trend is to try to coordinate colors or pattern rather than matching everyone to the same color/outfit. One fundamental principle for matching your clothes is combining colors that work in harmony. And, that’s what we need to remember while putting our outfits together: Pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme but try not to have everyone in the exact same outfit or color for top and bottom.

Fall colors such as darker shades of purple, yellow, orange, navy, tan and to top it off with a denim top are very good options to consider in this season.

Use Accessories to Break Up the Color Palette

Necklaces, scarfs, hats, bangles all add some interest to the images.

Sometimes kids will want to bring their favorite toy or stuffed animal to the photo shoot. If that happens, take a few photos with and without so you have options.

Follow a Theme

When selecting outfits for a family photo shoot, make sure that everyone is following the same theme: Formal? Casual? then make sure everyone is following the theme selected.

Temperature and Layers

If your photo shoot is going to be an outdoor session, try to wear clothes according with the weather. If this is unpredictable or you think you can be uncomfortable with your clothes after some minutes of walking while taking pictures, there is a great solution for this — layers! Layering your clothing is a great way to have options on the day in case de temperature changes, also can help to create visual interest and keep you warm and cozy while we’re outside playing in the leaves. Things like sweaters, scarfs, hats, tights, a long pant option and a shorts option, etc. are good things.

Shoes matter

There will be walking shots, standing shots, and possibly some shots of everyone’s shoes, so make sure they pull the outfit together and you won’t embarrassed to have them in the picture. For fall, boots and closed toe shoes are the best.

Treat yourself in order to look your best!
